#45 Haunted House for Sale! Friendly Ghosts....Price Reduced!

Of course, it’s up to you as to whether or not you believe in ghosts, haunts or ghouls.  (That includes wandering spirits and witches...)  It’s really a very personal thing – just ask anyone who claims to have lived in a “haunted” house unexpectedly!

Houses – especially older and very old ones – all have histories, some more colorful than others.  The stories, myths or facts (you choose which) are passed from inhabitant to inhabitant, on and on down the years.  The stories are kind of like that party game where the first person starts a little tale; then, it gets whispered from person to person.  It grows, shrinks or shifts and is hardly recognizable as the original version by the time it gets to the last person!

Stories about haunts are like that.   Tracing where and how they started can be a long, vague journey.  Sometimes the history of a suspected “haunted house” is kept secret and only discovered “later” when unsuspecting tenants either begin to hear the rumors, or personally claim to have had some ghastly, ghostly experience!

A house with a haunted reputation is treated either tongue-in-cheek with a wink, or is approached with caution fraught with “what if’s!  There are many, many, first hand accounts from perfectly reasonable folks who will swear they have experienced the presence of actual ghosts of actual deceased persons   They have made “appearances” in the quaint old house they purchased!  Unexplainable visions, untraceable sounds in the dark of night, then – sometimes – it’s just too much and the residents decide to move OUT!

Other somewhat intimidating histories include houses where someone died mysteriously or disappeared without explanation...   Or maybe it’s a house where some notorious criminal once lived – and died in a rain of bullets fulfilling a vendetta!   Some houses were tragic scenes of jealousy and intrigue or tragic suicides or fateful accidents!   And as odd as it may sound, there are prospective homebuyers who actually seek property with a colorful history!  Ghosts?  Tragic, wandering spirits?  Bring ‘em on!

Houses imprinted with other people’s bizarre histories and beliefs often present a dilemma for owners trying to sell.  To-tell-or-not-to-tell?  It’s a double-edged sword in a way – tell an eery, rumored history and maybe lose the prospect, or, don’t tell and risk the challenge of non-disclosure when the ghosts show up and scare the dickens out of the new owners!

October brings Halloween and with it come the newly embellished stories, images, costumes and speculations!  Can there really be ghosts?  Are there places where actual spectres hover and linger – refusing to move on?  Halloween makes fun of it all!  But is there a serious side?
